THE WINEMAKER: Wayne Stehbens
Wayne Stehbens is a highly regarded, multi-award winning winemaker whose cheeky smile and engaging manner bely the thirty one vintages already behind him. Wayne started at Katnook Estate immediately after completing his winemaking studies, but arrived with the advantage of knowing the property well, having worked there his father during his school holidays.
THE WINERY: Katnook Estate, Coonawarra
The old woolshed at Katnook Estate is a rather modest building with a very important history. This is where John Riddoch first planted vines in the famous ‘terra rossa’ soil of Coonawarra back in the 1890’s, thereby establishing the Coonawarra Fruit Colony and encouraging settlers to the area. Today it houses the maturing red wines of Katnook Estate, wines that have helped define the true essence of Coonawarra and brought the kind of international recognition John Riddoch would only have dreamed about.
