Peter Althaus曾是瑞士IBM公司的一名管理人员，但因为对葡萄酒的热爱，他成立了一个葡萄酒爱好者社团，拥有近7000名的会员。

在Peter49岁的时候，他决定环游世界找寻能酿造好酒的地方，继续自己对葡萄酒的梦想。他通过纬度来寻求凉爽气候的地方酿造葡萄酒，突破了常规的因海拔高度而气候凉爽的产区。最终，他找到了位于塔斯马尼亚煤河谷的一片圣地。他收购了Stoney葡萄园，建立了多明纳A酒庄。

在最短的时间内，Peter酿造出了一连串的顶级葡萄酒，被公认为是澳大利亚最具有创新精神最令人敬畏的酿酒师之一。

THE WINEMAKER: Peter Althaus

Peter Althaus was an executive with IBM in Switzerland, whose interest in wine led him to create a wine appreciation society that grew to number almost 7000.

But at the age of 49 Peter decided to take his passion further and he travelled the world in search of the perfect place to make wine. He was seeking a place that could explore the limits of cool climate winemaking through latitude rather than altitude, and he eventually found that sacred site in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley. He purchased what was then known as Stoney Vineyard, established Domaine A, and in a remarkably short period of time, and with a succession of spectacular wines, came to regarded as one of Australia’s most innovative and formidable winemakers.

THE WINERY: Domaine A, Tasmania.

The Stoney Vineyard was originally planted in the Coal River Valley, half an hour from Hobart, in 1973, and purchased by Peter and Ruth Althaus in 1989. They  expanded the original half a hectare to today’s total of 11 hectares, and employed what was considered at the time to be revolutionary techniques at the time such as close-planting vines at a density of 6000 per hectare,  and insisting that all pruning, shoot-positioning, leaf plucking and grape picking were done by hand. The property’s most notable wines are perhaps it’s most unlikely: a barrel aged Sauvignon Blanc of extraordinary complexity and truly distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon that has no near equivalent anywhere in the country.
