Paul Smith

Paul Smith

THE WINEMAKER: Paul Smith

Paul Smith completed an Honours degree in Agricultural Science before deciding that his true future lay in winemaking. After completing post-graduate studies he embarked on a career that has seen him make important contributions at some of South Australia’s leading wineries. Paul began as a cellar-hand at Knappstein in the Clare Valley, explored his growing interest in cool climate white wines, particularly Riesling under Brian Croser at Petaluma and Jeffery Grosset at Grosset Wines before becoming Chief Winemaker back at Knappstein. In 2008 Paul joined iconic McLaren Vale producer Wirra Wirra where he is now oversees a winemaking team crafting some of the regions very best wines.

THE WINERY: Wirra Wirra, McLaren Vale

Wirra Wirra a modern-day Camelot - an historic estate, enclosed by an imposing set of gates, with a fabled story that is surrounded in as much myth as it is reality! The name, taken from the local aboriginal language and meaning “among the gum trees”, was given to the property established in 1894 by the eccentric businessman Robert Strangways Wrigley. The winery was abandoned after his death in 1925 and lay dormant until the equally eccentric and visionary Gregg Trott set out to bring it back to life. Since then Wirra Wirra has established itself at the forefront of a rejuvenated and revitalized McLaren Vale.
