Monthélie

Comtes Lafon Monthelie Les Duresses

A small village nestling in a valley behind Meursault and Volnay, Monthelie produces mostly red wines, mini-Volnays with appealing fruit but sometimes a rustic edge, and a small amount of white wine.

Best vineyard is Les Duresses.

Recommended Producer:  Lafon

烦人的数据

Terroirs(风土) :

Facing south and south-east, the vineyards of Monthélie lie on pebbly Bathonien limestone overlain by red clay and marl. Some of the vines are growing on the Volnay side of the village, and some on the Auxey-Duresses side where the rock is Argovien limestone and exposures are easterly or westerly, depending on the run of the country. Altitudes are between 270-320 metres.

数据:

AOC granted in 1937

Includes 15 Premiers Crus " Climats "

Reds : 106.38 ha (including 34.31 ha Premier Cru)

Whites : 12.96 ha (including 1.69 ha Premier Cru)

Wine Characteristics(口感) :

The Monthélie red is a handsome ruby colour. Its aromas are of small red and black fruits (cherry, blackcurrant) with sometimes floral notes (violet, peony) which with age shift towards underbrush, bracken and spices. Its firm and velvety texture overlies delicate tannins. Monthélie, like Volnay, is thought of as a feminine wine.

Chambolle-Musigny

Chambolle produces the most elegant wines in the C?te de Nuits, having more active chalk and less clay in the soil than the other villages. The wines may be a little lighter in colour and less tannic than Gevrey-Chambertin but they have a sublime concentration of fruit. Village Chambolle Musigny usually provides excellent value.

Le Musigny is one of the top half dozen vineyards in Burgundy, producing wines of extraordinary intensity and yet with a magical velvety character. Les Amoureuses is immediately appealing, a wonderfully sensual wine which deserves grand cru status. Bonnes Mares tends to have a firmer structure and ages very well.

  • 94 hectares of village Chambolle Musigny.
  • 61 hectares of premier cru vineyards (24 in all). Best vineyards include Les Amoureuses, Les Charmes, Les Fuées, Les Baudes and Sentiers.
  • 24 hectares of grand cru vineyard - Bonnes Mares and Le Musigny.
  • Recommended Producers de Vogüé, Mugnier, Roumier, Barthod.
Les Amoureuses 5.40ha
The most celebrated Premier Cru in Chambolle. The vines are situated just below Le Musigny but above the significant drop down into Vougeot premier cru La Perrière, caused by quarrying rather than a fault line. When young it is almost ludicrously charming, yet it does not age quickly.
Leading producers are Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, Domaine Georges Roumier, Chateau de Chambolle-Musigny (Frédéric Mugnier), Domaine Robert Groffier, Domaine Amiot-Servelle and Domaine Bertheau

Terroirs :

The slope faces east at altitudes of 250-300 metres with only a shallow covering of soil overlying the parent rock, but fissures in the hard Jurassic limestone allow the roots to seek nourishment deep within the sub-soil. Boulders and gravels in the valley bottom ensure good drainage.

This appellation includes 24 Premiers Crus " Climats " (named plots).

152.23 ha (including 56.23 ha Premier Cru)

Wine Characteristics :

Chambolle-Musigny is a red wine, often regarded as the most ? feminine ? wine of the C?te de Nuits ; its intensity and delicacy express themselves with elegance and subtlety. To the eye, it presents a bright ruby hue with luminous highlights. It may darken a little over time but with no loss of impact. Its bouquet, easily recognisable, is composed of violet and small red fruits (raspberry, strawberry). With further aging it tends towards spiced ripe fruits and prune, or towards truffle, underbrush and animal notes. Rich, fragrant and complex, it lines the palate with silk and lace. Its delicate but fleshy texture in no way detracts from its solid and durable structure. On the sweet side with little trace of acidity, its tannins remain silky-smooth

Gevrey-Chambertin

Gevrey-Chambertin is the largest wine-producing village in Burgundy’s C?te d'Or, with its vineyards spilling over into the next door commune of Brochon.

Located in the far north of the C?tes de Nuits above Morey St Denis, classic Gevrey Chambertin is typically deeper in colour, firmer in body and more tannic in structure than most red Burgundy. The best can develop into the richest, most complete and long-lived Pinot Noir in the world.  This is largely thanks to the iron-rich clay soils, though much depends on whether the vineyard is located on either the steeper slopes (EvocellesClos St Jacques) or the richer, flatter soils (Clos PrieurCombottes).

  • 315 hectares of village Gevrey Chambertin.
  • 84 hectares of Premier Cru vineyards (20 in all). Best vineyards include Clos St Jacques, Lavaux St Jacques, Combottes, Corbeaux, Cherbaudes, Cazetiers.
  • 55 hectares of Grand Cru vineyards - Chambertin, Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Latricières-Chambertin, Ruchottes-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin, Mazoyères-Chambertin, Chapelle-Chambertin, Griottes-Chambertin..

    Terroirs :

The Premiers Crus occupy the upper portion of the C?te at heights of between 280 and 380 metres (brown limestone soils, rather shallow). Below are the Village appellation vines on brown calcic or limey soils. The vines also reap the benefit of marls covered with screes and red silt washed down from the plateau. These stony mixtures confer elegance and delicacy on the wine while the clayey marls, which contain rich deposits of fossil shell-fish, add body and firmness. Exposures vary from east to south-east.

This appellation includes 26 Premiers Crus " Climats ".

409.65 ha (including 80.46 ha Premier Cru)

    Wine Characteristics :

In the first flush of youth their colour is a bright ruby, turning to deep carmine or dark cerise with age. Strawberry, mulberry, violet, mignonette, and rose all help to make up their bouquet of spontaneous aromas. More maturity brings out liquorice, leather and fur, with gamey notes and hints of underbrush. On the palate, they impress by their firm structure, velvety tannins and delicate texture. These wines are everything a great burgundy should be : full-bodied, powerful, rich, and meaty. They have both body and spirit. Pleasant when drunk young ? on the fruit ?, they are nevertheless first and foremost wines for aging, often for long periods. As such, they make an excellent basis for comparing different vintages.

    Givry

Givry is a small village in the C?te Chalonnaise region (the smallest of the five village-level AOCs), which is almost entirely dedicated to the creation of red Pinot Noir wines. The appellation does produce a small amount of Chardonnay white wines, but they only make up around 10% of the total output.

As with all Chalonnaise appellations, Givry does not possess any Grand Cru vineyards, however it does have a proportionally large number of Premier Cru vineyards: around a sixth of its 541 acres are designated Premier Cru.

In the last few hundred years Givry has enjoyed being the source of the preferred wines of King Henri IV, as far back as the 1500s. Although these days it does not command the same reputation as it used to, Givry’s red wines are often viewed as some of the best from the C?te Chalonnaise, and, despite its small size, in recent years Givry has been expanding more actively than any of the other village appellations.

Givry’s red wines exhibit quite rustic and yet fruity flavours, and tend to be lighter than the other reds produced in the C?te Chalonnaise and subsequently ready to drink sooner.

    Terroirs :

Brown soils derived from the breakdown of Oxfordian Jurassic limestones and clayeylimestones. Most of the vines are planted facing east-south-east or due south at altitudes between 240 and 280 metres, or slightly higher in the case of the ? climat ? named Les Bois Chevaux.

This appellation includes 26 Premiers Crus " Climats " (named plots).

Reds : 223.52 ha (including 96.68 ha Premier Cru)

    Wine Characteristics :
Givry is primarily a red wine made from Pinot Noir grapes. To the eye it presents a brilliant carmine or crimson colour set off by purplish highlights. Its bouquet generally evokes violets, strawberries, and blackberries with variants which include liquorice, game, and sometimes spice (cloves). It is quite tannic in its early youth but after 3 to 5 years in the bottle it becomes suppler and fuller. It boasts a firm structure.

White Givry (Chardonnay) is a bright, limpid pale gold. It is redolent of aromas of honey or lemon with notes of lime and lily, then dried fruits (often toasted) come to the fore after the wine has aged some years. The mouth is delicate, with a balance between mellowness and acidity which guarantees its keeping qualities as well as giving it good length.

    Volnay

The finest and most elegant red wines of the C?te de Beaune are grown in Volnay, a village which might be twinned with Chambolle- Musigny in the C?te de Nuits, for the high active chalk content in the soil and comparatively low clay content.

Whereas in earlier times Volnay was made in a particularly light, early drinking style, these days there are many producers making wines which age extremely well.

The best vineyards run either side of the RN73.

    • 98 hectares of village Volnay.
    • 115 hectares of premier cru vineyards (35 in all). Best vineyards include Les Taillepieds, Clos des Chênes, Champans, Caillerets (including Clos des 60 Ouvrées) and Santenots in Meursault.
    • Recommended Producers:  LafargeLafonde Montille.

    Terroirs :

The oolitic limestone has a superficial similarity to the reddish igneous rock (porphyry) found in the Morvan district. It is pink in colour with pale green inclusions and overlain by banks of schist. At the top of the slope, this limestone predominates. Lower down we find white, chalky-textured argovien limestone. Lower still are reddish Bathonien limestones, pebbly and ferruginous. The soils at the foot of the slope are deeper and more gravelly. Altitudes : 230-280 metres.

The VOLNAY appellation includes 29 Premiers Crus " Climats " (named plots).

206.70 ha (including 117.65 ha Premier Cru)

    Wine Characteristics :

Volnay, admired for its delicacy, its sap, and its bouquet, has always been thought of as the most feminine of burgundies. Though certain of its terroirs modify this judgement with more vigorous and muscular versions, it truly does stand out among the red wines of the C?te de Beaune like the lipstick imprint of a kiss... The colour varies from bright ruby to a light garnet. Its aromas are of violet, gooseberry, cherry, and - with age - spices, game and cooked prune. It has an immediate appeal which, added to a slight natural precocity, means it can be fully open while still relatively young. The attack is fresh, the finish is warm. Drinking this wine, one seems to bite into a fresh fruit and breath in its heady aroma.

    在meursault的Santenots

Very occasionally, red Meursault is produced, with some fine, firm results. The best red Pinot Noir terroir, however, Les Santenots, is afforded the courtesy title of Volnay Santenots even though it is actually in Meursault.
