Trevor Hoffman Guide for MLB The Show 26 | U4GM Tips
The card rating can tempt you to spend early on MLB 26 stubs, then toss Trevor Hoffman into the ninth and expect easy outs. That is how I gave up two runs in my first Ranked game with him. Hoffman is not a velocity safety net. He works when you make the hitter feel fastball pressure first, then punish the swing timing with the changeup.
Why Hoffman Plays Differently From Power Closers
His value is the speed gap, not one single unhittable pitch. A hitter sitting on a high fastball can look terrible on a low circle change, but only if you have shown enough strikes to make that fastball believable. Players who throw the changeup immediately on every 0-2 count turn Hoffman into a much easier read.
I have had the best results treating him as a two-inning option when the opponent is aggressive, rather than saving him automatically for the ninth. Against players who chase sliders, Hoffman can still finish an inning cleanly. Against disciplined opponents, his control matters more: work the corners, accept a few foul balls, and do not force a strikeout pitch through the middle.
1. Establish the fastball before showing the low changeup.
2. Use the slider for strikes, not only finishing counts.
3. Move the changeup horizontally between different hitters.
Pitch Sequences That Actually Hold Up Online
My reliable sequence versus right-handed hitters starts with a fastball near the upper edge, followed by a slider that begins in the zone. If they are early twice, the circle change below the zone becomes much stronger. Versus lefties, I avoid living away every pitch. A changeup starting inside can produce weak rollovers, especially when they are expecting another slider.
The common mistake is trying to paint every pitch. Hoffman has the control to attack, but perfect corners are not required. Missing just off the plate is fine; missing arm-side over the plate with a slower pitch is what gets punished. Watch swing feedback and timing more than the result of one at-bat. An early foul tells you more than a late bloop single.
Where He Fits in a Competitive Bullpen
Hoffman works best beside hard throwers, not as the only late-inning arm. Bring in a high-velocity reliever first, then switch to Hoffman once the opponent has locked into upper-zone heat. That contrast is his real roster value. He is also useful in Events, where many players swing early and try to create offense before the short game ends.
Do not overspend just because a new Hoffman version arrives with better attributes. Compare his pitch mix and control to the relievers already on your roster. If you already have three slower right-handers, another power arm may improve your bullpen more. Keep some MLB stubs available for roster gaps, because Hoffman performs best as part of a varied pitching group rather than carrying every save situation alone.
